PRO_Hebridean Genealogy Services

We Are Not Just Scottish — We Are Hebridean

Over the past 200 years, more than 1,000 families left (or cleared) the Isle of Lewis. At LastHighlander.ca, we help you trace your roots back — even if you’re starting with just a few details.

We build full family trees, solve mysteries, connect you with DNA cousins, and uncover relatives you never knew you had — all with a friendly, thorough approach. Whether you're trying to identify a missing parent, break through a brick wall, or just expand an existing tree, we combine traditional records with DNA to get results.

Already have a tree? We can expand it with siblings, cousins, and branches that stretch from Lewis to Quebec, Ontario, Western Canada, and the U.S.

Our Stories, Our Journeys, Our Legacy

Whether you’re just starting out, staring at a mystery ancestor, or have strong DNA matches from Lewis with no idea how you’re related—even if you're adopted and curious about your roots—there’s a path forward.

Some clients come to me before a trip to Lewis, hoping to walk the land their ancestors once called home. Others want to know if they still have family there, or simply need help uploading their AncestryDNA or 23andMe results across other DNA companies (Free)  to uncover new matches.

One thing that makes Lewis research so unique is the deeply woven community ties. After working with thousands of DNA matches and mapping connections across generations, I’ve built a strong sense of “who’s who” on the island. Even when trees are missing or matches don’t reply, I can often spot the link.

That’s where the 5, 15, and 30-hour packages come in. They let us match the depth of research to your goals—whether it’s building a tree from scratch, navigating silent DNA matches, or tracing your line back to a single croft or township.

Every package includes full support—access to my notes and network, help identifying crofts and gravestones, and even assistance connecting with distant cousins still on the island.

This isn’t just research—it’s reconnection. And I’d be honoured to walk that path with you.

I believe heritage and genealogical/DNA research should be accessible to everyone—not just those with deep pockets. That’s why we offer clear, affordable pricing up front. If a genealogist won’t tell you the cost before a quote, it’s probably more than it should be.

I’m Leodhas Macleod, a genealogist with over 30 years of experience—and deep personal roots in the Isle of Lewis. This work isn’t just professional, it’s personal. I’ve spent decades building a private archive of family trees, photos, stories, and DNA data—much of which may already include your ancestors.

I specialize in untangling the unique web of Lewis surnames, complex cousin matches, and island DNA. And I’m not alone—behind me stands a vast network of researchers just like me, ready to help.

“Taken around 1999 — maybe my fourth trip to Lewis. This island holds a special place in my heart, and I’m proud of my Hebridean roots.”

A Must-Have for Lingwick Descendants

This is a fantastic resource for anyone with roots in the Lingwick area, especially those with a connection to the North Hill. It's well-researched and rich in local detail—an invaluable addition to my family history collection. A map overlay showing the locations of the families would be a wonderful enhancement, though understandably, some details may be lost to time. Still, this book preserves so much that might otherwise have been forgotten. Highly recommended!
